Teaching Philosophy

In the beginning, private music lessons are the most exciting thing in the world. Students have a newfound passion for their instrument and practice frequently. However, as time goes on, this attention often begins to wane.

As a teacher, my goal is to continue to inspire student interest and love of music long past the initial excitement. I believe in creating an environment in which everyone can learn at their own pace without feeling pressured. I want students to be able to have fun with music and try new things. This might mean playing a more modern piece or doing a collaboration with another student. Whatever it is, I want all my students to feel that music is a world they can explore rather than a strict set of rules about discipline and practicing.

As a young music student myself I often felt behind in the classroom. This is part of what drove me to teach, and part of the reason I am uniquely suited to help students who might feel nervous or behind in their studies themselves. Regardless of where they start, I believe all students have the ability to make improvements as musicians. Making music should be challenging, but above all, it should also be exciting, interesting, and joyful.
